CAUSES : Surya Grahan or Solar Eclipse in 2016 and What to Expect

When the Sun, Moon and Earth are perfectly aligned and the moon comes in between the Earth and the Sun, daylight is blocked out, and we Earthlings experience a solar eclipse.

In the middle of the day, animals and birds suddenly start going homewards and preparing for sleep. Are they crazy? Not quite. They are probably just confused by the Surya Grahan or solar eclipse. When the Sun, Moon and Earth are perfectly aligned and the moon comes in between the Earth and the Sun, daylight is blocked out, and we Earthlings experience a solar eclipse.

The eclipse on 9th March is expected to be of 1.045 magnitude and it will be a total solar eclipse. This will be visible from many cities in Indonesia and other parts of the Pacific Ocean. In India, however, the eclipse would only be partial. It is expected to last for about an hour in Guwahati, Kolkata and Bhubaneshwar, although in Delhi and the NCR, it will probably last only 6-7 minutes. Cities in Western India from Mumbai and Vadodara to Jaipur and Chandigarh will not experience it at all.

Like all natural phenomena, our mythology has something about eclipses too. Legendhas it that at the time of the churning of the ocean of milk, the gods tried to trick the demons from consuming the nectar of immortality, and the distraction was provided by Vishnu in his Mohini avatar. A demon called Rahuketu realized this and went and sat amongst the gods. He was seated in between the Sun and the Moon who alerted Vishnu, who in turn sliced the demon in half with his disc. The head came to be known as Rahu, and the tail as Ketu. Since then every time Rahuketu sees the Sun and Moon he tries to gobble them up, and the world faces an eclipse.

There are lots ofdo’s and don’ts associated with a Surya Grahan. While some make sense like not looking at the Sun with the naked eye as it could be affected by radiation; there are others which are highlyimpractical like not using the washroom or not cooking, cutting or eating anything at all for the duration of the eclipse. Considering that the ‘sutak’ or inauspicious time starts around 12 hours before the actual Surya Grahan, asking children and pregnant women to go hungry for that duration is just not possible.   People are known to throw away all food items cooked before the eclipse, which is such a huge waste.

On the other hand, asking people to meditate and concentrate on the Sun is a good way to channel positive vibes to the cosmos. If you really have to, watch the eclipse through a lens or projector. Look towards nature to do what is best on this first solar eclipse of this year.
