INDIA : THE Beginning of a DEMOCRACY - Republic Day

Today for the first time in our long and chequered history we find the whole of this vast land from Kashmir in the north to Cape Comorin in the South, from Kathiawad and Kutch in the west Coconada and Kamrup in the east, brought together under the jurisdiction of one Constitution and one Union which takes over the responsibility for the welfare of more than 320 million men and women that inhabit it

President Prasad said in his historic speech on 26th January 1950. A Tuesday Toast to the Pride of being an Indian, the largest Democracy in the world and all this even after 66 YEARS of the establishment of one such constitution. The Constitution was constituted with 22 parts, 8 schedules and 395 articles of rights and policies to run this saga of freedom and the people of this free country.

Coz this was the day when way back in 1930, our freedom fighters announced Indian Independence or purna Swaraj under the Indian National Congress, the first National Political Party. And no it’s got nothing to do with the Congress today.

Adoption and In Effect

Although the Constitution was adopted on 26th of November 1949 by the Indian Government but it then came into effect on the Morning on 26Th January 1950 after the 127 signatures of our leaders who were then part of the Indian Government. Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India presided over the Republic Day, held at the Durbar, Hall at Government House. A salute of mighty 31 guns shortly after 10:30 AM (reports by Fauji Akhbar) unfurled the Historic ceremony of the Free India.

The President riding in an open Buggy, reached the center unlike today’ demand for Bullet Proof cars, to the first speech of Constitution and declared a 2 Day National Holiday. No Parade No Setups, just a simple beginning with a message to the massive dreams of Free Indians and their Rights. Indonesia President, President Sukarno is the Chief Guest of 1st Indian Republic Day
